Birmingham City boss Lee Clark not relying on other results when his team take on Bolton

Lee Clark hopes his team’s Jekyll and Hyde nature away from St Andrew’s might actually prove their salvation tomorrow.

Birmingham’s home form has been nothing short of miserable, with only two wins to show from 23 games, accelerating their slump into the bottom three.

They head to the Reebok realistically needing to better Doncaster’s result at Leicester to avoid a drop out of the top two tiers for the first time in 20 years.

Incredibly, if the Championship table were based on away form alone, the Blues would actually be going into the final game with a chance of the play-offs.

Clark is puzzled as to why his team have been so much better on their travels.

“I can be confident because away from home (nine wins), we are in play-off position,” he said. “That’s the crazy thing about it.

“It is chalk and cheese, like two different teams.

“I am confident because of our away form and how we have performed generally away.

“We will obviously have to keep an eye on other scores which will determine what we do in the course of the game, in terms of taking risks.

“But ultimately if we are not doing our job properly, it doesn’t matter what is happening elsewhere.”

Many feel a point could be enough to secure safety, with Doncaster facing the champions at the King Power Stadium.

But Clark has played down suggestions he will look to play defensively.

“You don’t purposely set out to go for a point because if you play that game – and we can’t afford to with our defensive record – it rarely works.

“We have got to go for the jugular and try to win the game and if that doesn’t happen, but you are getting yourself a point, you see what’s happening elsewhere.”
