Dougie Freedman has pledged to continue speaking his mind in an effort to keep Wanderers in order next season.

The Whites boss has not been afraid to dish out some harsh words to his players during a disappointing campaign, not least after heavy losses at Blackburn Rovers and Reading.

In one memorable barb, Freedman branded some of his players “frankly not good enough for the football club” after a stinging 7-1 defeat at the Madejski Stadium.

But the Scot has no regrets about taking a hard line and warned his players he will not be changing his approach when they return after the summer.

“Too many pundits out there just try to tell people what they want to hear, or others who are controversial really don’t have a clue what they are talking about,” he told The Bolton News.

“But I try to be very honest with the Bolton fans. I don’t think publicly criticising players is always the way to go but there has to be once or twice, when I think it’s the right time, that they need to face up to certain things.

“If players are going to be responsible for signing a contract they have to be accountable for what it means. And I think the fans need to know that.

“Does it work? I think in this particular case it did. It was the truth, and most times when you tell the truth it works because you have nothing to hide.”

Freedman has hinted at issues behind the scenes that could have contributed to the club’s worst start since 1903, which saw them go 10 games without a win in the early weeks of the campaign.

From there, Wanderers failed to spend a single week in the top half of the table before ending 14th, the club’s lowest league finish in 20 years.

The manager accepts his portion of responsibility but feels he learned much more about the players who will be staying with him next season in the difficult times.

“I take the blame for what happened in the first 13 games but I’m also proud of how we turned it round,” he said.

“The start cost us, not only our position but the confidence as well.

“Yes, we finished lower in the league because of the poor run but it cost us more than people probably realise because of what it took to get the belief back into the team.

“Full credit to the lads, I believe they have done fantastically well to pull a difficult season round in time and to finish strongly. And I won’t forget that.

“We were only been beaten in two of the last 15 games of the season, so I have to look at it that way as well. Yes, that horrible run cost us but the recovery was unbelievable, it was immense.”

Dougie should be a politician, he almost makes it sound like we've had a great season!
Perhaps we need to ask the FA to start the season after Chrismas in future then dougie would be the best manager in the world.

Think Dougie is spot on with this. He accepts it was a poor season overall, but points to the recovery in the final third as a source of optimism for the future.
All this will put more pressure on him to start next season well. He'll have to.

we may have improved results wise but the football on offer was very poor, i see very little signs of any optimism to be honest, no money to spend and more mid table (if we're lucky) mediocrity to look forward to.

Im past caring about the quality of football.

We have not seen tippy-tappy shit for years, the one manager (coyle) who tried to play it failed big time.

If we have to win games ugly then fine, I certainly wont be complaining about the quality of football if we are lifting silverware next season and looking forward to a season of premiership football. I'm pretty sure most fans would rather have points on the board than seeing us trying to emulate Barcelona.

Big Sams football was hideous to watch, almost as bad as megsons at times, but nobody whinged about 'entertainment' when we were marching around Europe.

There was a lot of whining about the style of football - true. But if the results go as they did in the last 15 matches from the start of next season there's no way we'd be mid-table.

I'm no fan of Trotter or Danns but the fact is that Dougie has signed 2 players who contributed to the undefeated streak so it makes no sense to imply he's signing losers - and then changing the argument to "signing players who play unattractive football."

They'll probably go to shit next season, but at this stage Dougie's logic is sound and it's unfair to criticise him  for it IMO.

This "recovery" is just like last season's late run. I must admit, I thought we were in for a good season after that, even though it was clinical at best.

This time round, it's been even scrappier, two or three games aside. I've no problem with us being defensively organised and grinding out boring wins (AKA winning ugly), but too often we've just been hanging on to matches which is different. The Barnsley match springs to mind.

I agree it's been scrappier, but that comes down to us being far too poor in retaining possession and sometimes it's been about basic skills like passing and shooting. It could be argued that is due to Dougie playing a system that requires better players than we have.
Despite signing Danns and Trotter I still hope we'll see better quality next year and if we do there's a chance that the footie will be slicker all round.

i want to make it clear i like Danns and am glad we've signed him, i wouldn't want to lump him in with Trotter.

The problem is Dougie wouldn't know quality if it smacked him in the face.

He hailed the arrival of Medo as a masterstroke, but it soon became clear he had the ball control skills of a three legged donkey.

He paid £2m for Spearing, who aspires to be as good as a three legged donkey.

He paid £400k for Rob Hall, who is clearly the new Ali Dia.

And many others who simply weren't comfortable on the ball. So we'll continue to plod on with this shite while the teams around us find players who can retain possession.

Teams around "us"?
You're doing it again. Sometimes i think you're a closet Bolton fan.
Perhaps you'd be happier if the Development squad played every game? You allegedly rate Chorley and our reserves whupped them away in the pre-season so they must be brilliant in your book.

On the face of that interview, he's saying a lot of things that even the most ardent anti-Doug proponents (like me) would struggle to argue with.

But.......

He then slips into his all too familiar  "it's not me, it's these lazy fuckers who shouldn't even be professional footballers if I had my way" shtick.

Yeah Doug....we get it. There's no money available (apart from the obviously massive salary / bribe that Gartside lobbed your way to get you to leave Palace when it looked like they were going up) but it's down to you now.

So shut up and stop throwing stones.

Start earning your corn with the resources available.

That's what Garty's paying you for.............

He's just getting his excuses in early. He has a bigger budget than the majority of Championship teams.

I can't believe people fall for his bullshit and expect things to be any different next season.
