It's a classic and well debated argument, but let's do it again - What the heck!

For me, it's The Stones.

All day long.....every day.

Way cooler, better riffs, Jagger's a cricket fan - McCartney's in to disabled porn - nuff said.

Thoughts?

Not a fan of either to be honest.
But the Stones edge it for me.
And they were much better when they stopped ripping off black music.

prefer the Stones to be honest, but the best band of that era has to be the Kinks.

it was good but he's knocking on a bit now and was rambling at times, but he did some of the old classics like Beasley St, Twat (my favourite) and i wanna be yours.

Still a very funny man and i'm glad i had the chance to see him at least once.

The Hollies were better harmonisers than the Beatles. Personally I was never a big Beatles fan but I did like the Stones.

Tony Hicks was born in my town (yes it's mine) and lived two doors down from my aunty.

I like both the Beatles and Stones and I've never gone in for 'you have to be a fan of one or t'other'.

Having said that with this gun pointing to my head, the Stones shade it for me.  Very Happy

The Hollies a cover band mainly, more or less only wrote one hit song Jennifer Eccles real ground breaking stuff  everything else they had to have written for them by other song writers, could not write a song to save there lives. One hit album of greatest hits written mainly by a 10cc member and nothing else they belong somewhere between Hermans Hermits and Mud. The Kinks great little band with a poet for a lead singer who was not that good at singing his brother even worse, again a singles band mainly as their albums just did'nt cut it or sell, might fill a large pub if they reformed for a gig but one of my favorites all the same, Hollies nowhere near this level. As for SK's comment on Ray Davies that just does not stack up when you look at the facts and figures, much as i love his writing and songs you can only do so much sitting on a hill looking over london and he dried up and ran out of things to comment on and the fans got bored with his later efforts. I Like the stones a lot but again were mainly a singles band, albums not that good nothing  to compare to Revolver, Sgt Pepper or Abbey Road.

Very astute IMO. I'd argue that the Stones could write a bit starting with "Aftermath" in '66 which included Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb and a couple of other timeless songs and also that some of their albums were up there e.g. Let it Bleed but agree that for the most part their albums were great singles padded out. I happen to like the blues songs they nicked at the beginning of their career and Jagger's movie career was more interesting than the other's mentioned so it's always been the Stones for me. That said, all these bands were part of the soundtrack of the lives of us older blokes so I guess they all have a place.

Stones all the way for me but it's all down to personal taste. Exile on Main Street is probably my favourite album.

Beatles, right place, right time. Great if you're into pop bands, Stones had a good edge to their music and have done some good stuff.
I much preferred bands like the Doors, Cream, Yardbirds and later Who stuff than the stuff the teenage girls screamed at.
