Very sad. Seemed a principled politician, with a nice sense of humour. I can imagine he was good company. 55 is no age. RIP.

Was shocked when I read about him passing away this morning.

The world of politics has lost a great guy.

RIP.

A man that commanded respect and warmth, someone with principles worth voting for.

I was always saddened by his growing dependence on drink.......possibly caused by disillusionment with the thuggish, unethical behaviour of some of his peers in politics and the media???   RIP

scratch

Not sure how you can speculate on what drove a man to alcoholism without knowing him.

No suspicious circumstances tends to suggest that he may have taken his own life. His addiction to alcohol is well documented. RIP nevertheless.

No suspicious circumstances suggests heart attack to me, rather than suicide.

I'll give you the heads up Barb. If somebody of importance dies of natural causes the press simply refer to the person as having died of NATURAL CAUSES i.e. long term battle against cancer, heart attack etc etc. However when the police state there are no suspicious circumstances it means it isn't murder and they are not looking for anybody else in connection with the death. Whenever they include the proviso No suspicious circumstances it nearly always suggests suicide but they never use that word as it could prejudice any potential coroners enquiry.

Police are not treating his death as suspicious and a source told MailOnline he may have collapsed and died after a night of drinking but there is no evidence to suggest it was suicids

The inference suggests that his demise was self inflicted but no doubt a coroners enquiry will shed more light on events.

Sad news this.

Heard it breaking on 5live on the way to work this morning.

He was never really on my radar, if I'm honest, but I'm impressed at the way that everybody who knew him has stressed what a genuine bloke he was.

He was right about Iraq and he advised Clegg not to get in bed with the Tories.

Wise man.
