Neil Lennon says Bolton’s failure to capitalise on a positive start proved his side’s downfall against Huddersfield Town at Macron Stadium.

Liam Feeney struck the woodwork early on as Wanderers looked to build on their victory over Blackburn Rovers five days earlier.

But in the end second half goals from Joe Lolley and Mustapha Carayol proved Bolton’s undoing on what was ultimately a frustrating start to 2016.

“I thought that we were dominant in the opening 20 or so minutes,” Lennon said in his post-match press conference. “We needed to get a goal when we were in the ascendancy.

“We hit the post through Liam Feeney. To be fair, he’s done all he could in the position he was in. Had that gone in it could have been a different game.

“Then, when Huddersfield got the goal in the second half we just seemed to drop our heads. We didn’t show any real character or belief.

“We’re very inconsistent right now. We did really well against Blackburn and today we looked like we were in the mood to build on that win early on.

“We’re in a difficult position. We’re trying to give the players confidence and belief, but a large part of that is down to the individual.

“You can just sense that if a goal goes against us our confidence starts to wane a little bit. We need to not drop our heads and keep believing we can get points out of games.

“The players did keep on going today and Zach Clough had a couple of chances to equalise, but at the end of the day if we’re not putting the ball in the net we’re not going to win games. Huddersfield did that and deserved to win the game.

“We are very inconsistent and that’s why we are bottom of the league. Some of the players are giving me everything right now, but maybe that’s the level we are playing at right now.”

“We just have to keep battling on. We have a difficult cup game to navigate now at Eastleigh.”

BBC FA Cup show will be broadcast from Eastleigh so I think they reckon an upset is on the cards.

It's an old gag but it's served me well over the years, commenting on Bolton.
