Some folk find Leonard Cohen uplifting rather than depressing - in the same way that the blues is a way of laughing at your troubles.
I like his songwriting but what do I know? I actually like Bob Dylan and think Blood on the Tracks and Freewheelin' etc genius.

There's two guys right there who can't sing for toffee but I'm prepared to put up with their dirge voices just to listen to their arty farty descriptive writing.

Same applies to Zappa and Beefheart who were also vocally challenged but could tell a good story.

The vibes that Beefheart's band created where completely off beat but as a band they were excellent.
The one guy I will always have time for despite his passing is Rory Gallagher. A masterclass in musical entertainment!!

I'm a big Dylan fan,but there is something deeply depressing about Cohen.
It's music to slash your wrists to. Sad

DVV is a showman - reminds me of Dali and even looks like him a bit - but much as I love the man, he can't sing for shit.
Both he and FZ surrounded themselves with great musicians (look at the line up on Overnite Sensation) but I guess Leonard and Bob had nowhere to hide vocally.

Only Leonard Cohen song that makes me want to slit my wrists is that Hallelujah which is so overplayed and covered by so many people and their dog that it's starting to get to me. That and Famous Blue Raincoat.

As do I although I always suspected he put it on a bit - still good act.
Frank's Wild Years may well be appreciated by our own "Frank".

One of the strangest films/soundtracks that struck a chord with me years ago was Coppola's "One from the Heart". I'm not particularly a fan of romcoms if that's what you call that little tale, but I liked the film (strong cast) and the soundtrack was eerie in parts, mainly duets between TW and the country singer Crystal Gayle - a most unlikely pairing but it worked as the vocals mirrored what happened to the couples in the story and sounded .... different (in a good way).

He is different which makes for uneasy acceptance. Personally  I think he's made some great stuff and I'll never forget that rainy Satdy night at Bickershaw HP!!
