Best Before Dates

I've just found a tin of vegetable soup in the cupboard with a BB date of 2009!
It was hidden behind a couple of old biscuit tins.
Now,I'm not normally fussy when it comes to BB dates. Rather like Nat,my motto is,sniff it,and if it smells ok,get it in your mouth.
But this is a tester. I'm not sure I want to even open it,so I might just bin it.
Am I wrong?
And do you take any notice of BB dates at all? A hell of a lot of food goes to waste because of them.

I am strict in my adherence to 'use by' dates, 'best befores' I use discretion

Give some to Bread - and if he's ok, eat the rest yourself.

If you're going to bin it make sure you put the contents in the brown bin and the can in the blue bin- otherwise the bin-police will fine you.

Surely that should be contents in green bin and can in maroon bin after washing?

Sorry Fabian- Bury Council empties my bins- and in Bury blue is the new maroon. As no-one else in Bury washes we tend not to rinse things out either. The green bin is for paper only.

Shouldn't paper be in the white bin and newspapers and magazines in the read bin?

I have a shoot that I put all rubbish down. I have no idea where it goes.

No the metal in the can reacts with the contents and could kill you. Cats can tell the difference between canned food and pouch food and will pick pouch food every time.

In Birchwood we only have 3 bins.

Black.....General rubbish

Blue......Recycle bin

Green...Garden waste. For which we pay £30 per year.

I wouldn't want any more.

Recycling varies throughout the country based on what facility your recycling gets taken to.

Some recycling Centres (known in the trade as Materials Recovery Facility's or MRF's (pronounced as 'murf's')) have been built to deal with just certain types of stuff to be recycled, others can do the lot.

So if your council uses the local one that only deals with certain stuff, it the has to get you to sort out at your doorstep and put various other recycling stuff into other coloured bins so they can collect it separately and transport it to another recycling centre that can deal with it.

Councils push people to recycle not just because it is the right thing to do anyway but also because they have to pay a tax to put non recycled stuff in land fill sites.

So in effect if you don't recycle you are effectively paying for your rubbish to be taken away and dumped through a higher Council Tax charge.

If everybody recycled everything, your council would not need to pay landfill tax and thus would need to charge you less Council Tax accordingly.

Same with litter picking - its not free to throw rubbish on the floor - you simply pay more Council Tax for the Town Hall to pay people to pick the stuff up for you.

You amaze me. Is there nowt on telly that you could watch?

We have;

Black - general waste
Blue - paper
Brown - tins and plastic
Pink lid - garden and food waste

All (with exception of the pink lidded one) are full every two weeks when they collect them (3 weeks for the black bin) and i have to do a trip to the tip every couple of weeks.  We recycle everything we can and have a normal size bin.  No slim bin yet.  But its ridiculous.
