James Weir believes Wanderers can press the reset button on their season this week.

With new management and ownership in place and nine new signings settling into the squad, there is a very different vibe at the UniBol ahead of this weekend’s trip to Rotherham United.

By his own admission, Weir walked into a “bizarre situation” when he signed for the Whites last month and at 24 he has often found himself one of the elder statesmen in a team which has been chiefly comprised of youth team players.

But the former Hull City man reckons things are about to change and after a bittersweet free weekend enabled Keith Hill and David Flitcroft to get their feet under the table, there is a fresh wave of enthusiasm in the dressing room.

“Everyone would have wanted to play Saturday – and I can’t imagine a single person in football wanted to see what happened at Bury,” he told The Bolton News.

“But looking at it a different way, it has given us a few days to prep the team, get a shape, understand the new manager’s principles. And that couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Things feel different now. It has been a bit of a rollercoaster since I came to the club but I think we can start looking forward now.

“Hopefully we go into the Rotherham game well-drilled and capable of getting the points.”

Weir has also paid a tribute to the Wanderers fans for the backing they have given the team over a difficult few weeks.

“The fans have been absolutely amazing,” he said. “I’m from Preston, so I know about Bolton and that fans turn up in their numbers but the help they have given us has been great.

“Since the owners came in there has been a buzz. With a new manager as well you want to be sharp, you want to enjoy it.

“Nobody likes getting beat, so there have been a few lads feeling down. It has been a bizarre situation to be a part of but I think it’ll be onwards and upwards now.”
