Bolton Wanderers Football Club is saddened by the passing of our former player Johnny Wheeler at the age of 91.

Arriving from Tranmere Rovers, Johnny represented Wanderers between 1951 and 1956 and featured in the 1953 FA Cup Final.

Primarily a right-half, Johnny netted a notable hat-trick in a 4-0 victory against Blackpool in January 1953 when he played as an emergency centre-forward at Burnden Park.

He made 205 appearances for the club in all competitions scoring 18 goals before joining Liverpool in 1956.

Whilst at Burnden he won a solitary England cap when the Three Lions took on Northern Ireland in Belfast in October 1954.

The thoughts and prayers of everybody at Bolton Wanderers Football Club are with Johnny’s family and friends during this sad time.
