This is a serious question and not just a provocative quip.

I was brought up as a Methodist and  I am a  Christian by culture but my beliefs are somewhat confused.

I am interested to know how true believers see the present state of the world in relation to their beliefs. .

There's no such thing as God.

We are simply a production of science and evolution over an incomprehensible period of time - around 13.5 billion years.

Man invent the concept of God to explain away things they couldn't understand at that time.

That's why the western world who have mainly renounced a God is vastly more advanced in terms of science and understanding of the universe and not held back like those religions that believe life should be lived exactly as someone wrote it as, around a thousand years or more ago.

John had it right.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace,
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

However if believing gives you peace and purpose then I'm pleased it works for you.

Not for me though.

It doesn't work for me that's why I said I'm confused.

I tend to agree with Lennon.

Religion serves a useful function in society and it is predicated on belief rather than empirical evidence so for some people - those who believe - it can help them come to terms with their own lot and their own mortality. Unfortunately most religions may have started off with purity of thought and action but over the years they have been permeated with cultural values, human frailties and human reinterpretations - often for personal or political gain - which has led to them being used an excuse for war, persecution and prejudice.
Despite that religion remains a comfort for many people and so if it works for you, fine - just don't try to impose it on others.

I think this ends the argument. I've lost count of the number of times I've mentioned it, but at Least Lusty knows the truth.

If he/she did, they would have given up on humans a long, long time ago.

Good job we have Dr Who to keep saving us all the time.

I'm always in dumbstruck awe of people wth rock-solid faith despite everything bad that happens in the world and to them personally.

Aberfan changed my beliefs.

The film "Apostasy" confirmed them.

I'm more interested in angels.

Compo, that Last Of The Summer Wine philosopher, once asked, 'Do angels wear underpants?'

Do they?

Prove God exists.
The universe exists ergo something was created from nothing.
All change requires a catalyst ergo there was/is a creator i.e "God" or whatever you want to call the force that created something from nothing as it is logically impossible for somethingness to have always existed without it having being created in the first place.

Will that do for starters?

So who created God?

The Creator.
The whole concept of God is the one and only eternal force.

That is just circular reasoning and proves nothing. All you are saying is God created God.

I'm not saying that. I'm saying that the religious concept of God is the concept of an eternal force i.e. one that was never created but has simply been in existence for eternity.
That doesn't necessarily imply a physical manifestation and certainly not an elderly anglo-saxon bloke with a white beard wearing a hospital coat sitting on a cloud - more like potential energy in a matterless environment (although that isn't really possible in our known dimension)

Folk have discussed this for millenia without reaching a definitive conclusion either way so it goes back to what I wrote in the first place i.e. if you believe God exists then God exists for you and if you don't, God doesn't exist for you.
Personally I'm keeping an open mind about it basically because we are just fancy monkeys living on a tiny rock with next to no understanding of the complexities of our own dimensional space let alone those we haven't even discovered yet.

What I don't believe is that "God" has a conscious state and watches/judges/determines human behaviour on an ongoing basis - that concept is merely a tool of religion which is something developed by humans to pacify humans in our struggle to come to terms with the unknown IMO - although it's just as possible as every other unknown.

Lennon was wrong because religion does exist and God exists for those who believe in God because it is their reality.

I don't actually care. If God does exist he should be investigated by HSE.
