Forest Green Rovers boss on Jamille Matt's injury and Bolton Wanderers striker Eoin Doyle's winner

Forest Green Rovers boss Mark Cooper said striker Jamille Matt will undergo surgery on a 'significant' hand injury picked up against Bolton Wanderers.

The League Two clash was in its early stages when Rovers striker Matt collided with Bolton midfielder MJ Williams on the halfway line and the forward went down.

He was later stretchered off after just seven minutes and was replaced by Josh Davison as the New Lawn outfit lost their top scorer.

The visitors went on to claim all three points thanks to Eoin Doyle's magnificent volley just before half-time as Bolton leapfrogged Forest Green in the table.

And Cooper revealed Matt will require surgery on his hand, but did not go any further in terms of speculating how long he might be out of action for.

He told the club Twitter feed: "He’s sustained a significant hand injury that’s going to require some work surgically, so let’s see how that goes first before we speculate on what’s going to happen."

Forest Green boss Cooper felt Doyle's chance was Bolton only real clear cut opportunity on the day and the Irishman's clinical nature being evidence of why he has found the back of the net so much in recent years.

Cooper felt his defenders did not deal with Doyle on that occasion and believe's Matt's injury opens the door for other players in the squad to step up.

He said: “It think it was their only sniff of goal of the day. We had two or three really good chances that we have to score. They had one chance and that’s why Eoin Doyle is what he is.

"That's why he earns the money, that’s why he gets the moves, that’s why he’s been top of the charts goalscoring over the last few years.

"One sniff of goal and we don’t mark him properly, as much as our defenders are aware and they know how to deal with it, they don’t, and he smashes it in the back of the net.

“I thought we performed well today. We looked comfortable, we were solid but we have to score.

"The boys at the top of the pitch when they get those chances, that’s their job, they have to score.

"Maybe it’s time now for one or two others to step up that have not played as much as we’ll miss Jamille Matt now. I’m getting fed up of the same people missing the chances.”

It looked bad at the time but still puzzled on how it actually happened? Did he bend his fingers back when he collided with Williams?

Looks like tendon damage so his fingers would have been straight when he impacted Williams side.
Hope they give him an anaesthetic before they put them back.

Ps. If you want to try this at home, flatten your hand so your pinkies are fully extended then smash them into a wall straight on. 😄
