Bolton residents spotted a strange fireball object hurtling across the night sky.

Police and weather experts have now revealed it was a meteor, after dealing with dozens of reports from callers across the country on Saturday from 9.40pm onwards.

The Met Office tweeted: “Hi all, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite.”

Didn't you know that Mr Plod is the first line of defence whenever a meteor is hurtling towards the earth? All that Hollywood propaganda about Bruce Willis landing on the meteor and blowing it into tiny pieces before it gets here is just a cover story to protect the identity of our highly-trained law enforcement officers who have been monitoring activity since the contraversial "No Meteors Here!" law of 1884 was passed.

If there had been bobbies on the beat in the late Jurassic period dinosaur disaster would have been averted.
