Sounds like a bit of tearjerker, Bonce.
Just one of those books that give you a lift. No bad thing these days.

Trying to ween myself off Murakami books at the moment so I may give it a try.
I'm still trying to ween myself of the Famous Five books. I'm sure there's something funny going on between Dick and George.
And why is Uncle Quentin so secretive?

Never read any Famous Five but I reckon there's lots that went on in kids books back when we were young. That shoemaker's wife kept awfully quiet about those elves that visited every night!

What about Swallows And Amazons?

Titty indeed. Is that a name for any decent girl.

Nevil Shute and Howard Spring books are real and fantasy in equal measure. As are HE Bates short stories.

My Dad loved an old fashioned western,Zane Grey and the like. Can't say I'm a big fan of the genre myself.

I'm still on holiday which is when I find time to read and chill out so I'm on my 9th book in the last 3 weeks and should finish that today as it's raining here in serifos. Started off light with a few jo nesbos/harry hole followed by Simon toynes sanctuary/fall/tower series and now I'm working through a few mysteries

If you enjoy mysteries, wanders, can I recommend the author Robert Goddard? If you haven't read any, I can specifically recommend Past Caring, and Into the Blue.

I'll refund your money if you don't like it! Promise you'll stick with it...bit of a slow start, but more twists than a twisty thing on a very twisty day in twisty city.

Will do but currently reading the detectives daughter by Lesley Thomson - it's creepy.

Just ordered a copy. Reading Murakami's Norwegian Wood in the meantime.

Good man. Auster is a great writer. More popular in Europe than his native USA though.
