the voice of cricket has sadly passed away aged 84. As a lover of cricket he was a voice i grew up listening to and he was a wonderful commentator.

He truly was the voice of cricket in the same way people view Murray Walker as the voice of motor sport or Bill McLaren was the voice of Rugby.

"Good morning, every one and welcome to Lords."

You knew it was summer because Richie Benaud was on your telly at half ten in the morning and the sun was shining.

Happy childhood memories for me.

RIP Mr Benaud.

Other commentators could learn from his wisdom:
 "On commentary:
- "My mantra is: put your brain into gear and if you can add to what's on the screen then do it, otherwise shut up."

His humour:
- "And Glenn McGrath dismissed for two, just 98 runs short of his century."

Sorely missed. RIP.

You can't beat lying on your back in the sunshine, in a field somewhere in Wales on holiday, TMS on your radio and a nice cold beer in your hand, ready to tuck into a plate of cheese & pickle butties on fresh crusty bread.

I find it's the simple things in life that make us truly happy.

A good commentator and gentleman to boot. I rate him as one of the very best alongside John Arlott.

RIP Richie, a giant among sports commentators after being a magnificent all rounder and captain of Australia. Never lost a series as Aussies captain. The word legend is often misused these days but Richie was a TRUE LEGEND in the history of the game of cricket. Really sad day for the sport and I was really shocked and upset when I found out this news yesterday.

I'm as sorry to hear of Benaud's death as everyone else on this thread.

For me though the voice of cricket will always be that of Brian Johnson.

Here's one of his famous 'clips' -

Just to set the scene, Ian Botham had just got out by stepping on his wicket - he had gone for a hook shot and over rotated on the shot and tried avoid stepping on his stumps by trying to step over them and ended up knocking the bails off with his inside thigh...

Now trying not laughing along to this -
