Neil Lennon will get more ammunition to aid his striker hunt if Liam Trotter’s loan move to Nottingham Forest goes through as planned by the end of this week.

Dougie Freedman has enquired about a short-term deal for the out-of-favour midfielder, who has played just one minute of senior football for the Whites this season.

Forest are hopeful Trotter will join them in time to face Bristol City on Friday night but sources at the Macron insist an official decision on whether to send the 27-year-old out on loan has not yet been made.

Lennon is unlikely to stand in Trotter’s way if he feels he has enough cover in midfield ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Burnley, particularly as it could put some vital funds towards a new attacking signing.

That addition – mooted by the manager as a matter of urgency before the international break – remained no closer when the players returned to begin serious preparations for Saturday’s Turf Moor test yesterday.

Lennon will not be following up his interest in former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi. The 34-year-old is no longer training at Euxton and did not appear in Monday night’s development squad game against Sheffield United.

The likelihood of Wanderers getting involved with 31-year-old Carlton Cole also looks slim, with the former England international currently looking to secure a deal with Celtic.

If Lennon’s former club passes on the chance to sign Cole, it is understood he would be offered a chance to train with the Whites. But with some reports claiming Sunderland could also offer a similar short-term contract to play in the Premier League, Wanderers are actively looking at options elsewhere.

Gary Hooper tops Lennon’s wish list, although he is still out of financial reach unless other significant first-team players join Trotter in finding senior football elsewhere on loan until the next window.

Medo Kamara showcased his availability earlier this week, featuring for Sierra Leone against Chad, but interest in the midfielder from Bristol City appears to have died down.

Medo has not featured under Lennon and has not played competitive club football since September last year when he played for Dougie Freedman in a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in the Capital One Cup.

The former Partizan Belgrade ball-winner was touted around Europe in the summer but is looking for a domestic move to prove his fitness before January when a move to the continent could again be a real possibility.
