Scott, make sure you have bought a good one as some of the cheap ones when extended are a bit wobbly and not so good for when taking selfies.
The bluetooth remotes are a couple of quid on Ebay.

So, as a family we only evwr got pictures on days out of me and the kids or the missus and the kids but mainly just the kids. A selfie stick means we can all have our picture together on days out.
A wireless one also comes with a keyfob thing that connects to the phone via bluetooth that you can control the camera, zoom e t c
