We might be tempting fate on Boxing Day – but there has never been a goal-less draw between Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town.
The two sides have crossed swords on 20 occasions, the first of which was in November 1971, when Jimmy Armfield’s side were beaten 1-0 at the old Gay Meadow.
Shrews legend Alf Wood scored the goal, one of 64 he managed for the Shropshire men, putting him fourth on their all-time goals list.
Wanderers gained a measure of revenge later that season at Burnden as Ronnie Phillips and Roy Greaves supplied the goals in a 2-0 victory.
In 1972 the two sides met in the second round of the FA Cup, with the Whites again dominant. Phillips scored early on before Stewart Lee and John Ritson continued the rout in the second half.
Armfield’s men did the league double over Shrewsbury that season as they surged towards the old Division three title.
Both games, played three weeks apart, were won 2-0. Jimmy Redfearn and Stewart Lee scored at Burnden, while John Byrom and Garry Jones supplied the goals at the Meadow.
In 1984 Wanderers took two attempts to progress past Shrewsbury in the League Cup second round.
Having squeezed past Oldham in a thrilling first round, John McGovern’s side forced a 2-2 draw in the away leg with goals from Jeff Chandler and George Oghani.
A fortnight later they booked their place in the next round with a 2-1 win – Chandler again on the scoresheet alongside Steve Thompson.
The last time the two sides met in the league was back in 1991, when Tony Kelly had switched sides to help the Whites register another league double over his former club.
Kelly scored in a 3-1 win at Gay Meadow but Andy Walker supplied the only goal of the game at Burnden in a slender 1-0 win.
Wanderers’ most recent game against the Salop – now in a new stadium - was in the in League Cup in 2013, where Samni Odelusi scored twice on his full debut in a 3-1 win.
Rob Hall also grabbed his first goal for the club – in only his second start – as the Whites booked a second round game at Tranmere.
