I don't see Bolton Wanderers as a step down, says Joe Dodoo

Joe Dodoo has no regrets swapping the heights of the SPL with Rangers for a relegation scrap at Wanderers in League One.

The pacy striker, who played for Leicester the season they lifted the Premier League title, became Keith Hill’s 11th signing at Bolton earlier this month, making his debut as a substitute against Blackpool.

His chances in Glasgow had been relatively few and far between – just five starts out of 20 league appearances interspersed with loan spells at Charlton and Blackpool.

Dodoo had been close to going out on loan again in September but the chance to reunite with Wanderers assistant boss, David Flitcroft, who had worked with him at Bury, proved too difficult to turn down.

He tore up the remainder of his contract at Ibrox to sign a one-year deal with the Whites in a move he felt suited him perfectly.

“I think a lot of people forget the size of this club,” he told The Bolton News. “If you rewind a year and the club is in the Championship, we’re not sat here.

“Bolton are a big club and I don’t see this as any sort of step down. It’s easy to ignore what goes on behind closed doors but it’s my career and it’s not easy when you are not playing games, or you haven’t got the right manager or the right team.

“I’d rather be somewhere that I can achieve something with people who want to make me achieve, an environment that I benefit from.

“I feel like I have that here at Bolton. I have enjoyed what I have seen so far and I want more.”

Dodoo gave a brief taste of what is in store with a productive cameo in the televised game against Blackpool but feels he has much more to give to the cause.

“The manager expects the best out of me and I expect the highest of myself,” he said.

“I see myself more as a dynamic striker. Of course I want goals but I love to create for other players as well.

“I know I’ll be expected to do both at Bolton but I like the pressure. I put those sort of expectations on myself to make sure I’m the best I can be.”
