And Animal Farm was a book about Communism was it not?  I thought it was a good story anyway, although it's probably getting on to 50 years ago when I read it and have become a little bit more worldly since then.

It was not. Animal Farm was a satire on totalitarianism - a parody of the rise of Stalin.
Communism advocates a society wherein all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs - which is what the animals set out to achieve at the beginning of the book.
But what they got was totalitarianism wherein government (Napoleon the pig and his cronies in the book) exercises firm control over the public and private lives of it's citizens i.e. a dictatorship.
Think Hitler, Stalin, Putin, Cummings.
Or try reading the book now that you're "more wordly".
