MATCH REPORT: Accrington Stanley Reserves 1 Wanderers Reserves 2 12980478

Wanderers’ reserve side kicked off their Central League campaign with a win against Accrington Stanley at Hindley.

Harry Brockbank and Max Wilcox got on the scoresheet for the Whites, while Luke Stowe was on target for Stanley.

Sam Hird named a strong starting XI, with George Thomason, Andrew Tutte, Brandon Comley and summer signing Will Aimson all included.

Stanley also named a strong side featuring the likes of Seamus Conneely, Dan Martin and Harry Perritt.

Wanderers nearly had an early goal when Liam Isherwood made a great save to keep out Arran Pettifer’s header.

The Whites took the lead minutes later through Brockbank’s composed finish from Thomason’s through ball.

But Stanley hit back through Stowe, who fired home from close range after beating the offside trap.

Wanderers regained the lead when Wilcox guided Thomason’s inviting free-kick past the goalkeeper.

On the stroke of half-time, Isherwood made another fine stop to tip Thomason’s dipping effort onto the bar.

After the break, the goalkeeper did well to deny Max Conway’s low drive after Matthew Tweedley had played in the youngster.

Stanley thought they should have had a penalty when Kevin Spinelli went down in the box, but the referee waved away their appeals.

In the final stages, Harry Perritt headed over the bar after rising well to meet Matty Carson’s free-kick.
