Bolton to welcome back key players to training ground this week 13104298

Wanderers have been handed some good news in a difficult week with Kieran Lee and Gethin Jones making steps towards a first team return.

It had been feared that midfielder Lee could be out for weeks after experiencing particularly heavy Covid symptoms in the past few weeks.

But the former Sheffield Wednesday man is now feeling better and could return to training on Thursday, with a view to being in the squad to face Wycombe on January 11.

Lee has not featured for Bolton since the 1-0 defeat at Accrington on December 11.

Jones, who has been out of commission since October 9 with a fracture in his fibula, is also due to join in for the first time with full contact training.

The former Everton defender has been doing physical work over the past few weeks so could be included in the squad next Tuesday night, if all goes well.

Wanderers are looking to sign three more players in the January window but Evatt has confirmed there are no imminent deals.

“We are trying our hardest but it has made it challenging because people are trying to hold on to their players because of the Covid situation and there are lots of negotiations going on behind the scenes,” he said.

“For right now we need to work with what we have got, work hard, and try to bring some more players in.”

Xavier Amaechi and Ronan Darcy should be given international clearance to play again in the coming days and despite the disappointment of the defeat at Hartlepool – and the distraction caused by Dion Charles’ social media controversy before kick-off – he was pleased with his two new arrivals.

“Dion will get better but I think he played well and it has been an emotional day for him,” the manager said. “Marlon Fossey showed what he can do in the first half, he has real dynamism and pace, and he will get fitter and stronger with men’s football, really, because Under-23s doesn’t have the same intensity. But I was pleased with him.”
