Breaking news on SSN, Sunderland have sacked Martin O'Neill!

No news on potential replacements yet...

Coyle getting more phone calls soon?

He hasn't lived up to expectations tbh, so no surprise.

Wigan are not going down sadly. They are again unbeatable at the end of the season!

Sunderland however, are dropping like a stone...

Rightly IMO.

O'Neill has always had this reputation of being a great manager, dispite his record, a bit like Redknappe.

Just shows the power of the press.

One of the most over rated managers in the game - had a good record with Celtic when they had a bit of money but nothing much to write home about in england.

Once his bubble had burst at Sunderland it was always going to end one way.

I'd put money on Gus Poyet taking the reigns.

Awful manager and I'd love Sunderland to go down, but I'd enjoy it even more if Alan "8 year contract" Pardew took Newcastle down or Stoke - just to see Pulis have a rant at whoever he blames.

I'd like it to be one of the "giants" of the North East, Sunderland are favourites. Plus we know we can go 2-0 up at their gaff and not have to worry about a comeback.

Paolo Di Canio is travelling to Sunderland for talks over their managerial vacancy, according to Sky sources.

Di Canio as short as 2/9 for the Sunderland job now! (Paddy Power)

I hope so, that might rock Brighton into dropping like a coconut off a tree.

Paolo Di Canio has been appointed head coach of Sunderland.

The 44 year-old, who succeeds Martin O'Neill, has agreed a two and-a-half-year deal on Wearside.

Di Canio, who led Swindon Town to promotion from League Two last season but resigned in February, has no top-flight managerial experience.

The Black Cats sacked O'Neill on Saturday after a run of poor results left them only one point above the relegation zone with seven games left.

More to follow.

Good appointment. With 7 games left he might just inspire the players to win a few games. Whether he'll be any good long term is 50/50.

He'll likely fall out with someone, or do something stupid.

He might be a tactical genius but he's a ticking time bomb, very risky.
