...to buy this one -

...must be very near the top of the list - don't you?

Thanks Owen.

Allowing Cahill to go for next to nothing.

And selling Steve Thompson to Luton for £180k was another bad move.

(Never quite got over that one.)

Signing Elmander for £8 million and allowing him to leave for free is bad business, no wonder we're in such debt to Eddie.

I couldn't believe we were so stupid not to cash in, a year before his contract ran out.

Cheers Gartside, did you forget or something?

We've always been shite at selling our best players and letting them leave for a pittance, except for maybe Anelka. We also did pretty well with getting around £4 million for McAteer and Alan Thompson, maybe Sasa Curcic too, but apart from them, I can't remember us being great at selling some of our best assets.

You might find this useful.

If it's accurate, Elmander cost a lot more than £8m.

I've always said that Everton managing £24 million for Lescott and us only getting what we did for Cahill (£9 million?) showed how poor a bit of business it was. Also think we could have milked more for Anelka in his prime, and to an extent Gudjohnsen. We're just dreadful at selling players really.

Worst bit of business is Elmander because it's about value for money, if you're a club like Bolton and you spend £8 million on a striker he has to be a goalscorer, Elmander never was and never will be that so it was a stupid decision in the first place particularly as we needed to replace Anelka.

Agree with Elmander, should have cashed in. The worst bit on Transfer business is not having sensible relegation clauses within the contracts!

That site has got to be bollocks Dan. No way did we receive over £18 from Chelsea for Anelka.

4 million used to be the transfer template for letting our best players go. Surprised we got 7million for Cahill, if Chelsea  had offered less we'd have snatched their hands off!!!!
The one that's always niggled me was 60 grand for Francis Lee and the 70 grand we supposedly paid for his replacement, Terry Wharton.

Only Bolton could splash out £1 million on a defender from Raith fooking Rovers! Steve mcAnespie was his name.

Dean Holdsworth was a top signing.

So you base your entire argument on one bad miss?

Holdsworth was far from the greatest player we've ever had - but he gave 100% every single week and having read various autobiographies over the years, an absolute diamond in the dressing room.

Allardyce made some of the worst signings in our history but he got to throw the cash around so much that it tends to be forgotten apart from the more obvious blunders like Jardel and Cid - but there were others who barely registered on the first team radar yet cost a load.
Biggest disappointment for me was Borgetti who didn't get much of a chance although he was way past his best (like many of BSAs recruits) when we got our hands on him.
