Chung-Yong Lee aims to shrug off a season of disappointment by shining at this summer’s World Cup finals.

The Wanderers winger is heading for Brazil after being named as part of Hong Myung-bo’s 23-man squad yesterday.

But the 25-year-old admits neither he nor the Whites hit the standards he expected during the regular campaign.

“In terms of how much I played and the fact I didn’t suffer any big injuries, it was a good season for me,” he told sports.donga.com.

“But in terms of where we ended up in the table and some results, I think it was lower than what we and the fans were aiming for.

“This team is capable of doing so much better. I think I could have contributed with more goals and assists, but the team played well towards the end of the season.

“I hope we can take that forward to next season.”

Chung-Yong scored against Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the group stages and in defeat to eventual semi-finalists Uruguay in his previous appearances at the World Cup back in 2010.

And with 34 days to go before the big kick-off, he is looking forward to rubbing shoulders with the greatest players on the planet.

“It is the greatest honour for me, to play for my country on the biggest stage against the best players,” he said.

“It will be my second World Cup and to be playing in Brazil, it will be a fantastic experience.”

South Korea’s World Cup 2014 Group H opponents: Russia (11pm, Tuesday, June 17), Algeria (8pm, Sunday, June 22), Belgium (9pm, Thursday, June 26).
