It has been announced that the co-pilot of the crashed Germanwings plane almost certainly committed suicide, taking the passengers and crew with him. The voice box from the plane confirms the pilot had been locked out of the cockpit by the co-pilot.

After 9/11, they made cockpits impregnable. It keeps the terrorists out, but in the end it also allows someone to keep their colleagues out too.

So what should we be more scared of, terrorists getting into the cockpit of a plane or some suicidal pilot taking out his woes on innocent passengers?

Will you ever feel safe flying again?

In terms of planes probably neither as both are pretty rare.

in general obviously terrorism because It's far more widespread.

I don't know this guys motives yet but obviously he had serious serious problems that went untreated.

if the fella wants to kill himself, fine but why take out 150 innocent people as well? And if it turns out he was having mental health issues why was this not picked up by his employers?

Mr Spohr said Mr Lubitz's training had been interrupted briefly six years ago but was resumed after "the suitability of the candidate was re-established".

Interesting...

If every passenger was armed with a gun this kind of thing wouldn't happen.

There is an emergency code the pilot locked out of the cockpit could have entered to open the door. Why he didn't enter it is my question.

Shit, that's hard hitting stuff.
Its a shame when anyone feels the need to end their own life, but fucking hell, to take nearly 200 innocent people with you is totally beyond words. If there is a hell, problems or not, I hope this pilot is in the deepest, darkest depths of it.
Id go as far to say its actually pre-meditated mass murder.

Is that true? Sounds like a bit of a security risk if it is.

and to keep up that rouse he'd have had to have killed or done something to the co pilot which would be heard on the recording.

They should have someone with a fire arm on every flight.

Its was an airbus - it has a crew of 2.

He was locked out by another switch in the cockpit that the co-pilot must have activated.

They do on some transatlantic flights...
However, since sep 11, all cockpit doors are armored and thus bulletproof.
The trolley dolly used to have keys but again, to prevent highjacking - they dont anymore.
