Neil Lennon was pleased with the battling efforts of his side as they earned a late point against Blackpool at Macron Stadium.

Having seen Michael Jacobs fire the Seasiders into an early lead in the clash, the Whites were forced to wait until the last action of the match as Eidur Gudjohnsen’s header earned them a deserved share of the spoils.

Speaking following the final whistle against Lee Clark’s side, the manager praised his players for their application to overcome what had at times threatened to be a frustrating afternoon on home soil.

“I felt that we could’ve been here until Christmas and not scored at certain points in the game,” he said. “We missed so many gilt-edged chances today, but I think we got the least we deserved, although I think we should have won the game given our opportunities.

“We missed so many easy chances, but what happened today is a role reversal of what’s been happening to us a lot in the last couple of months.

“We’ve battered Blackpool, particularly in the second half which has very pleasing, but we were massively disappointed with our performance in the first half.

“It’s definitely one of the most frustrating afternoons that I’ve had, but we kept going and the character which we showed pleased me immensely, plus we got the goal that we deserved.”

He continued: “You’ve got to give Blackpool credit – Lee Clark set them up very well, motivated them well and they scored a very good goal, but with the chances we missed we should’ve been home and hosed instead of scraping a late point.”

Lennon also reserved special recognition for goalscorer Gudjohnsen and Emile Heskey, with the manager believing the efforts of the duo were ultimately pivotal in ensuring the Whites secured a point come the final whistle.

“Eidur was brilliant and did very well for the goal – he’s obviously been away with his country and scored last which is a great story, plus he’s had a baby this week too.

“He only joined back up with the squad late yesterday so it would have been difficult to start him, whereas with Emile we have to be careful with the fact that we’ve got two games in two days.

“They’ve been fantastic and they’ve been a massive influence on everybody in the squad – they’ve been two very important signings for us.”
