In the numerous offices I have personally worked, putting the phone down to a rude customer and immediately bitching about them was just normal and generally acceptable practice. I include a John Lewis call centre in that.

I once worked in a solicitors office where this one 40something Iranian chap in my team was nice as pie to everyone on the phone, but usually the minute they hung up, he'd slam the handset down and mutter "cocksucker".

I'm not saying the place I currently work stands firmly against that sort of behavior, I just sense that it's "not cool". For example, I had to chase a document the other day but ended up talking instead to some know-it-all receptionist who just told me to ring back some other time. When I put the phone down and called him a knobhead, instead of getting sympathy, I just got looks.

I feel quite strongly that you just have to be able to vent like this sometimes, even if it means you're badmouthing the people that bring the money in. As long as they don't find out, who the hell cares?

Are you very careful not to call people like this at work, or do you too need a moment here and there to say it how it is?

It's a bad habit you should get rid of. It's not professional and you could slip up at some point with it.

Your colleagues probably think you are going to be a bit of a liability and it brings a negative atmosphere into your office.

Oh come on KP, for christ sake.

Have you ever spent ten hours being screamed at by a load of old dears in the Cotswolds because the local Waitrose no longer does click and collect, or because the candle they ordered smells of citronella not pomegranate?

I suspect your response might be very different if you had.

KP has them queuing up behind Bargain Booze thanks to his ultra professional approach. Oh, and he swallows.

I worked in sales and call centre jobs for a total of 14 years. With age you realise there is no point to calling them names when you put the phone down as the only person it will harm is yourself and any career prospects you may harbour. Plus you do look a dick doing it. Some people may laugh but are probably more embarrassed to be honest.

I find it hard to picture you with a proper job.

I always imagine you're an eccentric nutjob who lives off his elderly parents.

Seen this at a few places too. I was a seconded team leader when i was 23 at the AA (not that one) and i got asked if i wanted to do it permanantly. Not a chance. At least twice a week a girl would come in crying after a row with her boyfriend. People took the piss proper with going in wrap (you know hips i bet) and various other tedious shite. Every job i have had, whether i like it or not i have just gone in and got on with it.

What i also hate, is the people who use work as a tool to socialise and have to be trying to organise nights out every week.
