The Word

What a fooking ace programme 'The Word' was.

For those of you too young or too uncool to have watched it, it was a Channel 4 programme in the early 90's that was on every Friday night.

It was totally live, loosely based around music, with guests on the sofa being interviewed by Terry Christian, Dani Behr, Mark Lamar and a few others.

The show was often criticised for being too wild and offensive, but it had some truly memorable moments. Who can forget Emu beating up Snoop Dogg or Shabba Ranks going mental about homosexuals.

But it was the music that made the show. No miming here, just live, anything goes, cutting edge music. Nirvana made their TV debut on the programme, Kurt Cobain declaring Courtney Love to be "the best fuck in the world".

Then there was L7 performing with their fannies hanging out. Rage Against The Machine having to stop playing because the studio audience charged the stage, and the debut tv appearance of Oasis.

Great tv that would never be made today. A shame.

I used to love The Word.

Eurotrash was the only reason to watch Channel 4.

The Tube and Network 7 were far superior and of course the DefII slot on BBC2 between 6pm and 730pm each evening!

The Word was really up it's own arse and Terry Christian was one annoying little f***. I watched it occasionally if I got in early but would have loved to had Sky + in those days just to fast forward through the irritating cocky shits that presented the show.
Eurotrash was titillating soft porn for teenagers, but had the amusement value of the occasional wonderful story like the woman with the world's biggest implant boobs who died or the German naked house cleaner service, but for the most part it was just gay people being silly.

I agree. Terry Christian was probably the most annoying person on TV at the time and I didn't much care for Dani Behr and Mark Lamarr either. Although I'll give Lamarr credit for not putting up with the homophobic shit spouted by some idiot Rasta.

And the second most annoying person on TV was of course Huffty.

The only people who watched it were people called Russell, Krispin and Mary.
The people who watched it all smoke weed, all own a guitar, are all eco warriers who go to Glastonbury each year.

The greatest music show EVER has to be The Old Grey Whistle Test closely followed by Jools Later and The Tube (funnily enough also presented by Jools Holland)
