Long lost shops of Bolton

Coins sweet shop on Blackburn Road in Astley Bridge. It was roughly the middle of the row of shops with The Pineapple on the end. We used to go in there back between 1976-79 and choose stuff from the penny tray - shrimp, cola bottles, flying saucers etc. Occasionally, we may or may not have taken turns in distracting Mr. Coin by taking forever with our penny selections while the other stole packs of Silly Putty.

Yes, it was Great Moor Street.

I went to Bolton County Grammar,  that was directly opposite it.

The first job at school was to get over the road to buy a padlock from there to put on your desk.

They must have done well from the pupils in the school

That grammer school is where i lived.  They turned it into apartments

It was a great place for a school back in the 60's.

Bolton was really buzzing then, it had a real heart to it.

Those were the days.

What were the apartments like?

They were really nice to be honest.  The one we had was a three bedroom as big as a decent size semi inside, obviously you dont have a garden or anything.

This one is similar but not as big.  We had two mezzanines and a corner apartment so had more square footage. 

Very high ceilings and huge windows.

Parking was a pain in the arse. Bet i got a ticket every other month when we was there

I'd forgotten all about Silly Putty - I bet Boltonbonce has used plenty of that stuff in his time for glazing jobs.

At the opposite end of that block used to be a shop that (a mate told me) did photocopying and sold porn mags. Sadly, it's now gone the same way as Softy's Hard Stuff - another nail in the coffin of the town's rich heritage.
