Wanderers let a two-goal lead slip against Bristol City but were happy to take a point and preserve their unbeaten start to the Championship campaign.

But who was the star man at the University of Bolton Stadium? And how did the players rate?

Chief football writer Marc Iles offers his verdict.

WANDERERS (4-3-3)

BEN ALNWICK…7

Did everything asked of him - made a couple of decent saves and collected crosses. Beaten by two good finishes.

PAWEL OLKOWSKI…7.5

Another impressive outing for the Polish defender, who was able to get involved further up in the pitch in the second half, combining well with Noone and Vela.

DAVID WHEATER…7

Involved in the first goal and solid in the air, as ever, but got caught lagging on a couple of occasions as Wanderers tried to play the offside trap.

MARK BEEVERS…7

Made some good defensive contributions but had his work cut out as Bristol City started to slide more and more ball between him and Taylor as the game wore on.

ANDY TAYLOR…7

Dug deep to defend the penalty box and made one excellent goal-saving challenge on Weimann. Had to do a lot of chasing as the visitors poured down his wing later on.

LUKE MURPHY…6

Used the ball well enough but didn’t seem to get a foothold in the game. Still feeling his way into the team.

JASON LOWE…6.5

Not as dominant as he had been a week earlier at The Hawthorns but still gave the back four a decent screen.

JOSH VELA…6.5

Wanderers rely on his energy up and down the right side and his combinations with Noone and Olkowski were the highlight of the second half.

CRAIG NOONE…8

Impressive work-rate up and down the right side – especially given illness had wrecked his week’s training.

JOSH MAGENNIS…7

Took the goal well and came into his own in the second half. The snarling striker is already making a name for himself at Bolton.

WILL BUCKLEY…6.5

Didn’t see enough of the ball early on but was in the right place at the right time to score the crucial first goal.

Subs: O’Neil 6, 60 (for Murphy), Wildschut 74 (for Buckley), Le Fondre 80 (for Noone)

Not used: Williams, Little, Oztumer, Hobbs.
