Shrewsbury boss Steve Cotterill's bold claim following Wanderers defeat 13403072

Shrewsbury boss Steve Cotterill has claimed his side had “enough chances to win two games” following their defeat against 1-0 Wanderers.

Dion Charles scored a dramatic late winner, finding the top corner with a stunning strike from the edge of the box to end Salop’s five-game unbeaten run.

It was the forward’s first goal for the Whites since completing a move from Accrington Stanley earlier this month.

Ian Evatt’s men have now recorded back-to-back victories in League One and are up to 15th in the table.

But Cotterill – who took charge at New Meadow back in November 2020, succeeding former Wanderers full-back Sam Ricketts - insists his side deserved the win.

“It’s a tough result to take, especially when you’re the better team,” said the Shrewsbury chief.

“It was a very good performance and we created enough chances to win two games today, but we didn’t just put one away today.

“In the end they end up scoring from one of their shots, but without looking at the stats I would say we most probably had double the chances.

“We were the better team but we just have to take one of those chances. If we do it becomes a different game.

“If one of those chances goes in, we win the game by more than one. But unfortunately for us it didn’t go in.

“It’s difficult to take encouragement from a defeat, and I feel down for the players at the moment because of the amount of effort they put in.”

Wanderers are back in action on Saturday, January 29 when they welcome second-placed Sunderland to the UniBol (KO 3pm).
