We are average.

Technically, 16th is below average although we could become average when Wheater, Holden and Vela are back and a couple of new signings come in.

Anyone heard anything about Nation, the Czech kid or the mystery man? Or anyone else on the radar? It's gone quiet.

We should definitely be looking to sign Jay Tabb from Reading. He'd be a quality player at this level.

You never know - he may be the mystery man (although I think we all know it was probably Dawson)

He'll get there eventually, but still not convinced it will be as a LB.

Alonso has looked poor in the past, but he's young and looking much better at this level. No problems at all with keeping him around and seeing how he progresses.

Now Nixon has confirmed that the "mystery man" was indeed Dawson, and that WBA appear reticent to let him go (unless they're just saying that to hike the fee) and that there are rumours that Knight and Ricketts are on their way out, where does that leave us defensively?

Even deeper in the poo if we're not careful. Not convinced that there is a plan B, but will have to wait and see.

Pointless keeping him, he's way too slow to ever make it.

You don't need to be lightning quick to make it in professional football..

I think Alonso would be better on the left wing, said that for a while.

Maybe with Petrov leaving he might move forward a bit.

Fat Sam may have missed out on Eto'o but it looks like we missed out on Kyle McFadzean although the fat lady hasn't sung as yet:

Bristol City have been told they will have to increase their offer to sign Crawley defender Kyle McFadzean.

New City boss Sean O’Driscoll said he wanted to complete McFadzean’s proposed move to Ashton Gate “as quickly as possible” yesterday after taking over from the sacked Derek McInnes.

O’Driscoll is familiar with McFadzean from his short period in charge at Crawley during the summer and is keen to continue the negotiations for the 25-year-old which were started by his predecessor last week.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
City are currently the only club in the running for McFadzean’s signature after Reds rejected an offer from another Championship outfit – believed to be Bolton Wanderers – last week.

However, Reds chief executive Richard Low says the Robins will have to raise their initial bid – thought to be in the region of £500,000 – if they want to secure the services of the former England C international who signed a new three-year contract at the start of the season.

Low said: “I wouldn’t say we are near a deal at the moment. We are fairly close in terms of valuation but it is not a done deal by any means"

So £600k would probably seal the deal? I like McFadzean and he and Dawson would make a good pairing. Still if we're only offering around the £300k mark for players we can't be choosers regardless of how desperate we are to sort out the back 4.

C Davies and Gregus (allegedly subject to international clearance)

No word on Nation and doesn't look like Dawson will sign.

No defenders signed although Nation is yet another "one for the future" - if we get him.

Sure they're pulling all the stops out to find what we need.

Newcastle apparently had a £5million bid accepted by us for N'gog

If we get a profit on him I'll be over the moon.
