No not Owen Coyle's brother in law!

Pretty boring if you're not into astronomy but a clump of linked stars have been found which is - now get this - 1.6 billion light-years in most directions, though it is 4 billion light-years across at its widest point.

Four billion light years across - the mind boggles!

Discovered by a Lancashire research group though!

5 minute audio for anyone who is interested.

Love stuff like this, been watching the stargazing live on bbc2 and though some what brian cox comes out with was rather confusing there was some amazing stuff on the show.

I didn't bother to watch Stargazing this year as I assumed it would be cloudy every night and there would be nothing to see, and we would be left to listen to the potato cruncher and cox rambling endlessly on about things I couldn't possibly understand.

That's pretty much what happend.

I'm no scientist, but I just about managed to grasp some of the things talked about though. Apart from the whole "universe started with big bang and is expanding" What is it expanding into? "Nothing"

Don't think anybody will get a proper grasp of the cosmos in our lifetimes - just think something that is 4 billion light years across as only just be spotted - what else most there be out there as well!?

The current thinking is that there was something before the 'big bang' and the scientists still can't give an explanation of how things work now without using in their theories things like dark matter and dark energy - both of which haven't even been discovered yet - nor indeed may even exist!

All we can do is just sit back and enjoy the mystery and wonders of space and be amazed and fascinated with the discoveries they make along the way.

A fascinating topic.

I still find it crazy that you can look up in the night sky and see Jupiter and Venus with the naked eye.

crazy to think that little dot is a huge planet.

Yes it is an incredible topic. 4 billion light years away, Jesus, that is incredible. Space really doesn't end, to think you could just travel in any direction for ever is mind boggling.
It is a shame so many mysteries will never ever be known due to the vast distances away these things are. Can you imagine some of the life forms out there?
