Wolves, Sunderland and Everton had been hot on the trail of the 20-year-old, who is out of contract at Gresty Road.
A permanent move would mean compensation for Crewe, although Wanderers are exploring every option, including a loan.

Don't know anything about him but some seem to rate him.

Max Clayton is on trial at Bolton Wanderers, according to reports in the North West.

The out of contract striker is currently looking for a new club after turning down the offer of a three-year deal with the Alex which has been on the table since last November.

The 20-year-old has had spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland so far this summer in a bid to earn a deal, but both have failed to meet Crewe's valuation for the England youth international.

Despite being out of contract, and seemingly not coming back to Crewe, the Railwaymen would be due compensation for Clayton due to his age.

Should Bolton want to take their interest any futher they would need to meet Crewe's valuation, thought to be around £1million, or face the fee being decided by a tribunal hearing.

The Bolton News reports: Wanderers have also brought highly-rated Crewe striker Max Clayton in on a trial basis, with a view to securing a move.

How can he be highly rated with a score ratio of 9 goals to 74 games? Very Happy

...and if he's that good, why did the mighty Crewe Alex not offer him a new contract?

Sums is not LL's best subject these days he only watches videos in his special chair which help him stand up at the touch of a button.
Shame when I heard he had an electric chair my hopes were lifted for a second until I was shown a brochure from the mobility shop

Heard good things about him but it's a bit weird that Crewe haven't kept hold of him. Everton and Sunderland are interested too, so he can't be that bad

Wolves try to reach deal over Max Clayton

Wolves are locked in talks with Crewe over compensation for Max Clayton as they look to avoid a tribunal hearing.

The clubs are in dialogue about the striker – who turns 20 today – after Kenny Jackett confirmed he wants to keep him at Molineux following a successful trial.
Crewe are due compensation because out-of-contract Clayton is under 24, came through their youth system and was offered a new deal.
He turned down a three-year contract offer at Gresty Road and also went on trial at Sunderland last month. But Wolves are keen to sign him.
“We’re speaking to Crewe, not myself personally but the powers that be are talking to Crewe,” said head coach Jackett.
“There isn’t anything to say, it’s a little bit of back and forth at the moment. There’s nothing conclusive.”
Should Clayton sign for Wolves without an agreement with Crewe the case would go to a tribunal. But Jackett is eager to avoid that to help preserve the relationship between the two clubs.
He said: “It would commit us to a tribunal which we wouldn’t be able to control. That’s the bad side.
“You could estimate it and say ‘maybe this or maybe that’, but it is better if the two clubs come to an agreement rather than go to a tribunal.
“Neither club could control that and there’s no guarantee they would be happy with the outcome. That’s the system.
“Crewe are one of our local clubs and it would be better if we were all on the same page.”
Crewe boss Steve Davis has already spoken about forging closer links between the clubs and Jackett is keen.
He said: “They are good people there and have a tried and trusted system of producing players. We would be happy with a situation developing and now we’re not in their division, it could be beneficial for both.”
