Is Modern Art Shit?

I hate modern art.

And by modern I mean anything that's not a proper picture - with people or a building or a landscape etc.

I went to my friends house last night and she'd just bought a new painting, cost her nearly £300. As far as I could tell the artist had poured three colours of paint onto the canvas and spent the next hour riding his bike over it.

Am I just thick? Do I not get it? Please explain what I am missing.

I get that art is in the eye of the beholder and all that, and the "What is art" thing.

but i went to an art show in Leamington once and one of the pieces was the plastic part of an asthma inhaler painted white and placed on a pillow.....

seriously....

For me that isn't art, but hey, it might be to someone! And i guess thats the point.

but i would say it does baffle me.

Modern art is shit but I guess a lot of people will say you should open your mind to try and understand what the art is portraying.
I think a good example to demonstrate how crap modern art is, is that wind up on David James done by Rio Ferdinand. David James is into modern art and was shown a painting (which I think was done by a 5 year old if I remember) and he was saying how interesting it was and how much thought went into the painting. Prat.

No doubt somewhere there is someone who thinks Bolton play good football, but just because they see it doesn't make it true.

I remember the newspapers fawning over some bint who set up an unmade bed in an art gallery. I leave an unmade bed every morning before I leave for work, it's not art, it's just lazy.

Modern art just seems to be a mash up of some mentalists brain where as 'real' art seems so be about the skill and technique with a good old pen and brush, and I have much more respect for that.

as a side note i modelled naked for a painting class at manchester uni for 4 years. the teacher said i had the perfect form.

Half of these modern 'arty farty' types come across as total ponces. How the fuck does wearing a cravat make you an artist?

Bobby Sands did a massive modern art dirty protest in Long Kesh with his fingers, which stunk like fuck and took days to clean up but he was never nominated for his artistic flair.
