The board of Bolton Wanderers Football Club has today, Tuesday 17 November, announced the appointment of Trevor Birch to act on behalf of the club and owner with immediate effect.

The role will see Trevor providing assistance to the board and owner which will include managing negotiations with the various parties who have expressed an interest in purchasing the club.

Brett Warburton, Vice Chairman, said: “Trevor is a football man who has great experience in dealing with clubs in difficult financial situations. We welcome his support in assisting us through this difficult period.

“Our current owner Eddie Davies is fully supportive of the appointment and will work closely with Trevor.

“Eddie has provided an incredible level of financial support which has brought the club great success and meant huge enjoyment to all fans. We all owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.

“Unfortunately, since relegation, we haven’t been able to turn things around on the pitch and re-gain promotion despite running a very high player wage bill. As the Premier League parachute funding disappears we need to find further funding to replace it. Eddie has indicated that he can’t provide any further funding and we have therefore been working hard to attract the appropriate investment to take this club forward.”

Brett also commented on the position of chairman Phil Gartside: “I’m sad to report that Phil is seriously ill at the moment and Trevor will now lead the negotiations on behalf of the board and the owner.”

Hope Phil is OK and recovers quickly.

Fingers crossed this guy can steady the ship in the meantime.

He's not in hospital according to the club but I certainly hope it's not life threatening.

Is Big Trev an Administrator?

It sounds like it.

And this next bit might come across as a bit insensitive now, so if you're offended by what I'm about to write, I apologise in advance:

If the worst happens to Gartside, I want to take a peep inside the coffin and check his pulse because I wouldn't put it past him to pull a Reggie Perrin.

Birch apparently is Acting chairman
Your final comment there Bredders wasn't really called for

Wanted shut of gartside but not his death. Bread if I'd have said that you'd have been like a dog with a bone!
The man is rather odious though.
Anyway onwards and upwards!!

Fair enough - I'll delete it.

And I've just Googled this Birch fella and it turns out he is an insolvency specialist who has worked with Leeds and Cardiff.

Gartside hasn't stepped down according to the club, surely they'd have said that if true.

Does this mean that a deal is on the table? With Gartside sidelined then you can see how negotiations would be held up (48 Hours), Maybe ED stepped in to move the talks on?

The News reporter said He had stepped down as Chairman?

he is according to BN, and they never get anything wrong...

whatever, I hope his health improves, and good he is not in the firing line of a v stressful time. I have come across Trevor Birch, not personally, but by repute. Firm but fair, very numbers focussed, and has been a bit of a Mr Fixit as well as pure insolvency. Been involved in some controversial arrangements, bt without knowing the background, that may or may not be because of his involvement

Certainly hope PG recovers soon, but the cynic in me thinks that a lot of the illness could be a face saving exercise, and a removal of a major obstacle, whilst clearing the way for further negotiations.
Doing it in such a way also keeps up the image that we aren't completely down on our uppers, and still have room to manoeuvre, (which we all know we don't really).

I have a feeling that he may well use this as a way to get out of the club.

Either way I hope he gets well soon.

How's Sepp Blatter's recovery going after his recent "serious" illness?
