Storm Eustice: What do big storms mean for wind power?

Parts of the UK are being hammered by Storm Eunice, with winds of up to 92mph (148km/h) recorded in Wales.
But does more wind during such large storms generate more energy for wind power captured in the UK's turbines?
Prof Nicholas Jenkins, of Cardiff University's School of Engineering, is an expert on the subject.
He explains why more high wind does not usually mean more green energy in the grid.

Great Sluffy, so when the wind blows too much we turn the turbines off and when the power lines are down, the energy is wasted anyway. Storing any excess energy uses up even more power to convert it back to electricity and the amount of storage space we have is highly limited anyway. So this is the future is it? Let’s just use the oil, gas and coal we have under our feet and around our shores until some other mug country does the experimenting and we can convert cheaply and quickly when it actually works.

I’d be happy to hear that’s true Lusty but from what I’ve been led to believe we can’t store what we don’t use and the extra goes to waste. How and where is it stored?
In this country, most goes into the grid, but that has limited capacity if we don't export the excess it quickly enough. Here is a list of the ways that can be used to store excess wind energy if we invest in them instead of fossil fuels.
Perhaps the new mega battery factory can be part of it?

Makes no sense getting into debt with the government.
What happens next year - or the year after that?

It's electricity that's killing me. I wish I knew what was doing it.

Probably all those 100 watt red light bulbs you have and having to charge all your vibrators. Very Happy

You massive titwipe, as if I'd have to advertise myself with red lights. Men queue round the corner just to catch a glimpse of me.

I submitted my meter readings yesterday and they said they were on course for projected usage so they weren't going to change my direct debit amount at the moment. Bet that changes come 1st April though.

I just got my new rates through from BG and it’s an increase of 132% on last year so where’s this rubbish about a 54% increase? I’ve yet to work out the actual numbers but this seems way over the top, especially for Gas. Norpig, whatever you do, don’t forget to make sure that you send a reading for each on the 31st if you want to avoid any projected numbers at new prices.
