Spearing is exactly the sort of player we need after losing NRC and Muamba. I can't really see him wanting to come down to the championship though.

This. Seeing as the Sanchez deal fell through for this role Spearing seems a natural choice and could become very important. If we don't get him OC has to give Vela a chance to do it - which would mean dropping one of the so-called creative mids who really won't like it. I suspect there's some politics involved in this. The team are desperate for a defensive mid but could you imagine e.g. Lee or Petrov's reaction to being dropped for a youth team product? Not sure OC has the nuts to do it. A signing like Spearing might be more palatable to them but OC really does have to get the squad rotation culture going before it's too late - however any team put out must have an anchor man.

A source close to liverpool on twitter has said the Spearing move is close to happening on a permenant basis.
