They are arguing the toss whether it’s been disclosed or not at time of purchase regardless of the fact that it stated everywhere on the site that existing medical conditions will not be insured.

Insurance companies are always looking for a way out mate.

Does this mean you are liable for your hospital bills and all your other costs as well?
In a nutshell yes.

I will be going to the financial ombudsman once back in the UK.

Bloody hell!

You may want to consider getting a specialist's opinion as to whether mild asthma could be in anyway connected to the illness you suffered.

If it couldn't then surely it would be completely irrelevant if you had declared it or not?

..dunno..

Just a thought.

Maybe Norpig knows someone who could help in that respect?

We somehow have crossed wires. The underwriter asked why I didn’t disclose that I had asthma that was on my medical file from my local GP. They also haven’t got back to me and are trying to pull out.

I did wonder at first if they tried to get out of paying as I had a cannula fitted as standard on the first day and they were looking at trying to link that to my asthma somehow. I told my doctor here this originally and he laughed and said they simply don’t want to pay and gave me another letter stating it had nothing to do with asthma in case I took it further so I already have this base covered.

The hospital bill in full came to around £16,000 and our flights back came to approx £600 which isn’t a great deal of money when the staff save your life which I’m extremely thankful for.

My dad paid £15.5k for the hospital fees as we just paid the last of the money on a house here which he has since wrote off which I’m very grateful for. I said I would try to get the money back for him.

I showed a friend of mine who works in insurance the policy docs and he said that as I hadn’t declared asthma then they still have a get out clause which would be harsh.

The financial ombudsman could ask me to pay a higher premium and force the underwriter to pay out fully, simply make them pay out a percentage or agree fully with them.

I simply can’t see it myself though as it was in the terms and conditions, policy document and faq’s that existing medical conditions were not insured.

Fingers crossed that the ombudsman rules fully in favour of you!

At least you are alive and mending well, which is the main thing as you say.

Some good news on the insurance front. They have agreed to pay the main hospital bill which is good news!

Just need to find out if they are paying the other medical bills now.

One annoying thing though is they sent me an offer with business class flights back which we received this morning after arriving back in the cheap seats!

Hi KP,

Just seen this, and I'm glad to see you are almost(ish) back to normal, (bet its been a while since someone thought you were normal),  Very Happy
Hopefully you and your good lady are now getting back into the boring routines of life, and things are looking up for you both.
Can you remind me of the name of the insurance company you went through? I've also got a fair list of previous ailments, and thats one company I'll bypass.
FYI, I was going to complain to the Ombudsman about a problem with my mortgage, when I had one. In no time whatsoever, they changed their mind, cancelled the last £8k of my mortgage, and even gave me a further £200 for the trouble. Apparently, as soon as anyone is referred to the ombudsman, there is an automatic charge of £2500, (may be less), as well as the bad press. Just wondered if you had mentioned to them that you were taking them to the Ombudsman.
Anyway, good luck with getting over this, and as you say, this forum is always brilliant with their support.
Good luckfpr the future mate.

Thanks for your kind words Glos. Smile

I have been walking about since hospital thinking I had a psychological problem when i had my catheter fitted at first. It turns out I’ve got a urinary tract infection that I hadn’t known till now which I’m hoping will be sorted tomorrow! Very Happy

With regards to the travel insurance company, it was annual travel insurance .com which is part of Zurich.

I will never ever touch them again for all the hassle it was worth.

I hadn’t threatened further action with the onbudsman at the time but it was last Saturday when we arrived home I had an email with a business class seat available to get home on but was already home.

The Mrs had a line message from the hospital in Thailand asking how we would like the money to be repaid back which gave us a nice shock!

Zurich at the end are a waste of time as they questioned my non disclosure of asthma on my medical report that I hadn’t included but the website was littered with the fact that existing medical conditions were not covered by the insurance.

They simply didn't want to pay and pissed us around for a fortnight or so especially when the email address was for 24 hour assistance.

There phone number is for Canada too! Shocked

Having a catheter removed? Some people would pay for such an experience Very Happy

Zurich used to have a major office here in Cheltenham. Had I known, Id have been knocking on their door, asking for answers  Laughing
My friends son was seriously injured in Martinique some years ago, and he had to jump through so many hoops to get him home. You seem to have come out of it quite well considering, and having your dad become your  safety net took so much worry and uncertainty from you at a crucial time.
Buy him a beer from me, (I'll pay you when I next see you)  Very Happy
I rarely come on here now, but I'll check in from time to time, to see if you are sufficiently absorbed into this mad-cap, but excellent, forum
take care.
