Looks as though you were a little too young to remember!

One thing you never see these days are ladies wearing headscarves - my mother would never go out without one and my dad of course wore his flat cap.

Happy days.

Can anyone work out where the picture was taken, the building seem familiar but I just can't seem to place it?

I'm thinking Mealhouse Lane perhaps - although it seems a very wide pavement if it is?

Wow, I can't remember the camels. I must have been about eleven at the time. So for me it would have been around 63/64.
And my mum always wore a headscarf.
And a pinny.
My dad was from Salford and used the word 'mard' whenever we started crying about something. I often overheard my gran ask 'where's shitn'arse'?
It took me a couple of weeks to realise she was asking about yours truly.
Yeah i remember calling other kids Mardy when they were crying.

Was looking at the Slide post on the looking back thread and remember when i was a kid, a friend of mine got a Spile stuck in his arm because he put his arms on the outside of the wooden sides of a slide while going down.

He had to go to Bolton Royal to get it out, another blast from the past Bolton Royal Infirmary.

My gran used to admonish me with the words, 'It's like Muldoon's picnic'. Still have no idea what she was on about.

Never heard that before. Do you have Scottish ancestry? Could be related to the Lockharts who were players in the Jacobite rising and after defeat the clan leader and close clan members were exiled - hence moping about?

I havent got Scottish ancestry as far as I know. I didnt know about the Lockharts though. It could well be that! I always assumed it was spelt Lockhearts. I will research that.

The Clan Lockhart from wiki

The name Lockhart was spelt Locard or Lokart in early times.[2] Like many other Scottish families the Locards came from England to Scotland after they had been dispossessed of lands by William the Conqueror.[2] In the twelfth century there were Lockards near Penrith and later in Annandale.[2] In Annandale the town of Lockerbie is said to have been named after them.[2] The chiefly family finally settled Ayrshire and Lanarkshire where they have held lands for over seven hundred years

I remember, back in the seventies, Lads using the word " Grozzing ". It means spitting. They would say " eew who keeps grozzing? " and point at some spit on the floor where someone had scraped their throat out onto the pavement.
Hevent heard that word used for decades. Possibly because I dont associate particularly with Grozzers.

My favourite word is syzygy as it contains no true vowels and has an interesting meaning. Also like antidisestablishmentarianism although I've never had the opportunity to use it - until now Smile
And I've noticed there's a fair bit of floccinaucinihilpilification on this site.

Flocci and the anti one were commonly used on that word quiz show whatever it was called, way back in the late 80`s or somewhere. It was a good program.
Flocci is 29 letters long if I remember.
