It probably was a sub standard performance for us recently, but like I've said it's the graft that has set us apart. We passed it about better under Eddie Howe and it didn't get us to 2nd place in the league.

We don't have what you would call a flair player but we do have half a first team who have experienced promotion from this league before.

We play it long, we pass it about, we have two centre midfielders who were made for each other at this level. The spine of the team is as good as anything at this level.

We've destroyed QPR at home and Derby away by playing great football and we've drawn with Forest away by playing a Rugby Union kicking game.

I suppose a lot of it has to point to the manager.

He knows how to mix it up.

Where as Freedman mixes us up? An away win is all that really matters in your position at this stage of the season, so good luck until May.

No Triumph, Gartside does the curse stuff all by himself. As long as he's in the boardroom we're in trouble.

Report: Bolton 0-1 Burnley

IN BRIEF

Burnley left the Reebok Stadium with all three points thanks Sam Vokes’ second half goal in what was a closely contested Lancashire derby.

Bolton arguably shaded the opening 45 and were unlucky not to take the lead when Chung-Yong Lee hit the woodwork.

But after the restart Burnley responded and Vokes tapped home a loose ball on the hour mark to settle a contest that was played at a high tempo throughout.

TEAM NEWS

David Wheater’s inclusion in the starting line-up for the first time since last September was the surprise of the team news.

The former Middlesbrough centre-half, who had spent the winter months on the sidelines following a minor knee operation, replaced Zat Knight in the heart of the defence.

The only other change saw Medo Kamara in for Mark Davies.

FIRST HALF

The game started with a real sense of an occasion, with both sides displaying plenty of zealous with little in the way of prolonged periods of quality.

Inside the opening ten minutes it was Wanderers who looked the more likely, with Chung-Yong Lee at the hub of Bolton’s positive play.

The Korean cut infield from the left before working Tom Heaton at the near post.

Minutes later Heaton was then forced to scamper back towards his own goal, after Lee’s shot following good wing play from Chris Eagles deflected and looped on to the crossbar.

The signs were good. On 11 minutes Trotter then glanced another Lee centre wide.

Whilst Burnley were penned in their own half, Sean Dyche’s men still possessed a significant threat. A reminder of that came when Danny Ings’ clever angled ball found Scott Arfield in space, who then crashed an effort wide when it seemed easier to hit the target.

The early breakneck tempo subsided somewhat, as the game reached the half-hour mark in what seemed no time.

Burnley visibly grew in confidence, though never really worked Adam Bogdan.

The only real noteworthy attempt on goal in the run up to the interval came in the way of an Eagles drive from 30 yards that dipped straight into the bread basket of Heaton.

HALF TIME

Within seconds of the restart Bogdan was forced to react well to claw away David Jones’ low drive, as the visitors immediately upped the ante.

Ben Mee forced Bogdan into another low save before the visitors’ patience eventually paid off on the hour mark.

Arfield danced his way to the right byline before sending a low ball across the face of goal, where Vokes was on hand to tap in at the back post.

Bolton responded with a double substitution. Mark Davies and Andre Moritz replaced Liam Trotter and Medo.

While the visitors had a confidence about them, Wanderers continued to scurry away with little to show for their endeavours.

Further frustrations were bore out when Moritz was forced from the field of play clutching his upper leg. Neil Danns came on in his place.

Dyche’s side were effective in taking the sting out of the game, maintaining possession for prolonged periods.

The 80-minute mark came and went with Heaton rarely troubled.

Bolton did press forward in the final minutes, but once again the Burnley rear-guard stood strong and in doing so held on for all three points.

Freedman - We deserved a point

Dougie Freedman felt his side’s performance against neighbours Burnley on Tuesday night at the Reebok Stadium warranted at least a point.


Wanderers were very much on top inside the opening half, but that pressure didn’t culminate into any goals for Freedman’s side.


And in the end the game was won by Sam Vokes, who converted a low Scott Arfield cross in the second half.


Speaking in his post-match press conference Freedman said: “I felt that once again we were the better side in a game. We’ve hit the crossbar in the first half and the ball has flashed across the face of goal.


“We’ve got to take our chances when they come our way – we have to be ruthless when we’re on top.


“I felt we probably deserved to be at least one goal up going into half time.


“Overall, we feel like it is one point lost this evening because I didn’t feel we did enough to warrant all three points.  


“I think Burnley showed why they are towards the top of the table. I thought they defended very well and put their bodies on the line for the cause.


“Right now we have got to stick together. This is a difficult moment for the club, but we’re all fighting for the same cause.


“I thought our fans were fantastic tonight. They got behind the side throughout the course of the game and they saw a committed performance.


“We had to make a late call with David Wheater, but he came into the side and did really well.


“We can’t hide from where we are right now. Games against the likes of Burnley won’t decide our future. It’s games against the teams in and around us that are going to prove crucial.


“We have to start picking up points, starting with next weekend’s game against Millwall.”

Dougie said we deserved a draw, how? we had no goal threat at all in the second half, and yet again he waits for us to concede before becoming more attacking. Why can he not be more positive from the start?

In the 2 games i have seen Trotter play he has been awful and lazy, you wouldn't think he was playing for a contract would you? I cannot see the logic in letting Cravies go and bringing in Trotter, more tactical genius from Freedman!

I felt sorry for Jutkiewicz, he naver gave up and lead the line well but had no support

Our delivery from set pieces is appalling, i've seen school teams deliver better corners and freekicks, also can someone please tell Mills he is not Zico and to lay off trying the same 40 yard crossfield ball he tried umpteen times last night.

All in all a depressing night - FREEDMAN OUT!

A well worked goal but all made very easy by the Bolton defence.

There are three Bolton players out wide doing very little and Spearing (I think) is picking up no one and is 8-10 yards away from Arfield when the pass is delivered.

Having said that Baptiste hasn't a clue where Vokes is.

First half was as good as i have seen us all season. We dominated. Multiples of crosses and corners and chances. Good atmosphere.
Second half we were still edging it until they got a break away, one of the only threats they offered. Except 2 long range efforts.
once they scored they defended deep. Dougie immediately replaced two midfielders with attacking mids. Unfortunately Burnley made themselves very hard to break down. For some reason we couldn't find a way through and we offered nothing.

positives, juke looked immense. Like Kevin Davies but useful.
lee, best i have seen him this season.
bogdan made a decent save.

negatives
mavies and moritz were ineffective. Not doogs fault.
trotter started ok but soon looked knackered.
we seem not to be able to convert anything into the net.
