Report: Bournemouth 0-2 Bolton

Goals either side of half time from strike partnership David Ngog and Jermaine Beckford sealed a well-earned 2-0 victory for Wanderers at Bournemouth.

French number nine Ngog put Bolton on the road to victory with a cool finish from an acute angle in the 37th minute after tremendous play from Chung-Yong Lee on the wing.

After a resolute and determined second half display, Bolton sealed the win in stoppage time through a characteristic finish from Beckford to send the travelling support into raptures.

Bolton boss Dougie Freedman named the same side that drew against Ipswich Town seven days ago at the Reebok Stadium.

French striker David Ngog and South Korean international Chung-Yong Lee retained their place for Wanderers’ first trip to Bournemouth for the first time in over ten years.

Bournemouth began on the front foot at Dean Court as they went in search of their fifth home league win of the season.

Despite their early pressure, Bolton created the game’s first opportunity when full back Alex Baptiste, in search of his fourth league goal of the season, hit a thunderous strike from the edge of the penalty box but was denied by a fabulous save from Cherries custodian Lee Camp.

The Whites went close again in the 12th minute when Jay Spearing’s effort from 20-yards took a wicked deflection off a Bournemouth defender and sneaked past the far post.

One minute later and Bolton keeper Andrew Lonergan, making his second league start of the season, was called into action to push a close range attempt from Tokelo Rantie over the bar.

It was turning out to be a real attractive contest for the Dean Court crowd with both teams showing real purpose in the final third and threatening each time they went forward.

Mindful of the threat Bournemouth possessed with youngster Ryan Fraser and South African striker Rantie proving to be a handful, Wanderers were looking dangerous on the left hand side through Chung-Yong Lee.

The South Korean’s excellent first half display reaped rewards for Wanderers as they went ahead on the south coast with 37 minutes gone on Darren Deadman’s watch.

The winger threaded a delightful pass from the left hand side into the path of Ngog who cleverly rounded goalkeeper Camp and from the acutest of angles slotted the ball into an empty goal for his first of the campaign.

Into the second half and Dougie Freedman’s side started well as Sierra Leone international Medo tried to replicate his goal scoring heroics from last weekend but his dipping effort from 25-yards flashed wide.

The final 45 continued in the same vein as the first with a frantic contest at the home of last season’s League One runners up.

As time passed by the Cherries started to see more of possession but Bolton’s two holding midfielders Spearing and Medo were providing tremendous cover for the Whites’ defence.

Manager Freedman made his first change of the afternoon with 67 minutes played as youngster Odelusi was introduced for goal scorer Ngog.

Bournemouth were making a real fight of the game as they looked for a breakthrough in front of a crowd of 10,015, 995 of those from the Reebok Stadium.

With just over ten minutes to go, the Cherries came only a whisker away from an equaliser as substitute Brett Pitman curled a free-kick from the edge of the penalty box over Lonergan’s frame.

Visiting boss Freedman responded to Bournemouth’s pressure by bringing on club captain Zat Knight in place of Lee.

A late flurry of Bournemouth attacks followed but against the run of play Bolton sealed all three points as striker Beckford showed great composure and strength to hold off two Cherries defenders to hit a left footed strike from inside the penalty area which looped over a helpless Camp into the back of the net.

Sounds like it was a good goal from Ngog. He has a habit of coming up with the magic when everybody had decided he was a lost cause.

Dougie Freedman shares his thoughts after Bolton's 2-0 win at Bournemouth.

Dougie Freedman says he was delighted for the travelling fans as Bolton ran out 2-0 winners against Bournemouth at the Goldsands Stadium.

Over 1,000 travelling fans were on hand to witness goals at the end of each half from David Ngog and Jermaine Beckford as Wanderers extend their unbeaten run to six.

“I am happy for the travelling fans,” Freedman said in his post-match press. “We had 1,000 fans here who all made the long journey to the game and they got what they deserved.

“They saw a performance from their team that was fully committed.

“I thought we got it spot tactically and we frustrated them at times. On the counter attack we created four or five very good opportunities and it could easily have been more. We were fairly comfortable throughout the majority of the game.”

The Whites are now six games unbeaten in the Sky Bet Championship ahead of their final game before the November international break, with Millwall the visitors to the Reebok Stadium in seven days time.

Boss Freedman praised the work rate of his two frontman Ngog and Beckford, who both ran tirelessly in order for Bolton to secure back-to-back league wins on the road.

“We had worked a lot on our tactics this week and I think that showed in the limited number of opportunities Bournemouth were able to create,” the manager explained.

“I thought both of our strikers played very well and it was pleasing to see them get on the scoresheet.

“They both worked very hard and held the ball up well. They are both very talented players and they put in a real shift for the team.

“Overall our performance was very good, Chung Yong Lee showed his desire in midfield and the spirit in the group is starting to build. David Ngog and Jermaine Beckford got what they deserved with their goals.”

Best interview Dougie has done since he's been at the club IMO, odd to say but you can still he it still annoyed from the Blackburn away game which is good to see.

Think it's fair to say our style and personnel are more suited to playing away from home, where we get a little more space on the break to get at teams. The trick for Dougie now is to rectify the home form, the confidence from this game will help but I still feel we need something different from Medo and Spearing in the middle of the park to give us an extra option when going forward.

A very good result though and it sounded thoroughly deserved on Wanderers player, 6 unbeaten and Beckford having 3 in 4 sounds like things are picking up but there's a long way to go yet!

Always interesting to look at the stats, on  the surface it seems we were lucky to win yesterday, Bournemouth had far more possession but rarely threatened and with better finishing we could have scored at least two more. The home team is always going to have a couple of good spells of pressure but the defence and midfield coped well generally and they were limited to one great chance in open play and couple of free kicks, going foward we were OK and carried a threat Ngog, Beckford and Lee all worked really hard which was good to see. 

We thoroughly deserved the points yesterday, we were the better team. The tactics were right, the attitude was right and the result was right. Great job from the fans as well by the way, non stop noise for 95 minutes.

It was a decent game tbh. Two good goals and a good atmosphere with the travelling Wanderers fans giving it large. The Bournemouth fans hardly raised a cheer all afternoon.

CYL was our weak link imo. He often beat their full back but instead of putting a cross in he always played it backwards to our midfield and he still can't take corners either. He never seems to beat the first defender.

McNaughton ran his socks off as did Danns. Much more positive approach on Saturday so let's hope they carry on in the same vein against Millwall.

Dougie seems to have resorted to the "containment" tactic he used successfully last year which basically means allowing the opposition possession and counterattacking with pace.
Whether or not this comes into play after an attacking period where we hopefully go ahead - or we set up like this from the outset is unclear.
But if this is indeed the case, it's tricky to invite teams to push forward when we're at home.
